Singing in Solidarity: Women's Voices Celebrate Labor Day

 — (EDT, UTC-04) — (EDT, UTC-04)

In celebration of Labor Day 2023, the American Folklife Center wanted to honor the work of women in both the past and the present. What better way to do that than through song? We combed through our Homegrown Concert videos, our Archive Challenge videos, and other performances sponsored by the Center over the years for appropriate songs. The result is this compilation of performances by Thea Hopkins, Ialoni, Martha Gonzales, Piper Hayes, Windborne, and Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light. It features the voices of women, with the support of their male colleagues.

These songs explore different dimensions of women’s work. The first two are from the point of view of traditional roles women have played in community, from child rearing in the home to leading healing in a community after a tragedy that has affected everyone. These activities constitute work, but often aren't recognized as such. Other songs consider such labor issues as poverty, poor working conditions, and fair pay.

Online Homegrown Concerts premiere with enhanced contextual information and links on the Folklife Today Blog.

The videos alone premiere on both the Library’s YouTube channel and website. They remain available for viewing in all three locations.

International Indigenous Music Summit

 —  —

Toronto, CN

The International Indigenous Music Summit (IIMS) is the only global event dedicated to creating awareness, sharing resources, and building opportunities for the Indigenous music community.

The International Indigenous Music Summit is the only global event that provides a unique space for Indigenous artists to discuss, exchange, and share and connect with one another, in a culturally sensitive and appropriate space directed at building long-term, mutually beneficial relationships between artists and industry professionals.

Participants and collaborators include creators, event organizers, presenters, key knowledge holders from the arts sector, and cultural connectors from many parts of the world. An elder advisory committee has foundational input on thematic material, organization, and execution. IIMS embeds international buyers as delegates, selecting cultural connectors within regions that represent particular opportunity for Canadian based Indigenous artists.

Folklore Society of Greater Washington

A virtual concert via Zoom, I will be sharing the evening with Jessie Lloyd!

Jessie Lloyd is a Songkeeper. An Australia Aboriginal singer, social historian and cultural practitioner of Indigenous song and founder of her award-winning Mission Songs Project. As a cultural ambassador, Lloyd takes audiences on a profoundly-moving musical journey into the depths and diversity of Australia’s history, culture and identity. Jessie’s work continues the songlines of Aboriginal Australian, a body of traditional songs that carries the 60,000-year history of the world’s oldest living culture. She engages her audiences through intimate storytelling, moving harmonies and historical insights, using her humour and truth to share the voices of her elders, just as they would around a warm campfire or kitchen table.

Hailing from a musical family, Jessie’s father Joe Geia is a pioneer of Aboriginal protest songs and composed the Aboriginal anthem ‘Yil Lull’. Her grandfather Albie Geia was conductor of the Palm Island Brass Band and leader of the historic 1957 Palm Island Strike. Jessie has dedicated her musical career to maintaining the intergenerational song traditions of Indigenous music, using her unique methodology to continue these songlines into modern music and the arts sector. She is also a mother and partner, and is currently based in Brisbane, Australia. For more info: www.jessielloyd.com

Four songwriters, trading songs and swapping stories. And you have a front row seat!  w/David Thorne Scott - www.davidthornescott Janie Barnett - www.janiebarnett.com
Rene Pfister - www.renepfistermusic.com Four songwriters take the stage, seated in a comfortable semi-circle. They take turns playing songs, occasionally joining in with each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. The format encourages conversation between the writers, which gives the audience an opportunity to hear these creative people talk as if in their own living rooms. Inspired by the "guitar pulls" of the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville.  You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene -- all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made. Hosted by Somerville singer/songwriter David Thorne Scott. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series.
